Bristol Law Centre affirms our solidarity with trans, non-binary and intersex people. We believe we can support the rights of everyone, and we uphold that belief in delivering our free legal advice services to all people affected by disadvantage and inequality.

We are making this statement while awaiting more on the legal implications of the recent UK Supreme Court ruling (For Women Scotland v The Scottish Ministers, 16 April 2025) which issued a clarification of the Equality Act 2010 definition of sex (specifically ‘woman’) as being biological sex at birth. The Equality Act 2010 also protects people based on gender reassignment, which includes trans people and those identifying as non-binary.

We recognise the significant distress and uncertainty the ruling, and the reactions to it, are causing. We believe in a world where everyone is treated with compassion and reject any framing that further marginalises people already experiencing exclusion and doing so by pitting communities against one another.

Bristol Law Centre will continue advocating for inclusive legal frameworks that protect all people’s rights. We are a safe and welcoming service for everyone, if you are affected by the ruling and wish to get support you can contact Bristol Hate Crime & Discrimination Service (Home – BHC+DS) or Bristol Law Centre
