Steve’s story

After being sacked due to a disability, we helped Steve recover lost earnings, but also the self-confidence to look for new work and remain independent.

Steve was sacked from a job with a private company because the owner didn’t want to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to accommodate his disability in the workplace. Steve took the company to an Employment Tribunal in 2011 and, representing himself, won £14,852 compensation for unfair dismissal, breach of contract and disability discrimination. The employer refused to pay.

Steve asked a private solicitor to help enforce the Tribunal award. When this failed, he came to the Law Centre. By pursuing legal action against the employer, including using court bailiffs, we recovered Steve’s original compensation plus interest for the time it had been unpaid – nearly £19,000 in total.

The legal action of the Law Centre not only meant Steve recovered his lost earnings, but also helped restore his self-confidence so he could look for new work knowing that he can be independent and that having a disability doesn’t mean he has no rights.
