Advice needs in Bristol 2024

In June 2024 the Bristol Advice Partnership held a ‘Future of Advice in Bristol’ event attended by over 100 people from diverse stakeholders including funders of advice, health, local authority, equality groups, pro-bono, academia, community organisations and more.

What was discussed:

  • 13.4% of Bristol residents are in fuel poverty, and 1 in 8 households experience food inequality; 25% of Bristol’s eligible population claim Universal Credit and 7.8% of the eligible population claim Personal Independence Payments. 10.4% of Bristol residents found it difficult to manage financially in 23/24; £51.8m is owed in Council Tax; 48% of BCC tenants are in rent arrears, with 12% of these more than 7 weeks in arrears. (@May 2024)
  • The main advice charities provided legal advice & casework to 12.6k people in 23/24 (+many more who receive information/guidance) which is 3.2% of the eligible population of Bristol.
  • The clients advised by the main agencies benefited by £14.3m. This gain was achieved using £4.3m funding (mostly from charitable trusts and foundations)
  • Advice tackles the intersectionality of inequality and can lead to improved health & life outcomes.
  • Identifying and addressing systems failure is a vital part of the future of Advice in Bristol and can reduce demand.
  • Partnership working is essential for the future of advice in Bristol.
